Sarojini Naidu

A poet , a orator, patriot and nationalist leader, Mrs Sarojini Naidu was called Bullbul-e-Hind or the Nightingale of India , not only for her voice and verse, but also her extraordinary oratory. A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and his non-violent movement throughout her life, Mrs Sarojini Naidu was born on 13th February, 1879 at Hyderabad in a revolutionary family.

Her father , Dr Aghomath Chattopadhyay, was a revolutionary democrat and was known for his anti-imperialist activities and her one brother Viredranath Chattopadhyay, was in exile all his life for the same cause , for whom her heart always cried.

After 1915 , she was in the thick of India’s freedom movement and spent the rest of her life for this cause. She was the first Indian Woman President of the Indian National Congress and the first woman governor of the state Uttar Pradesh .She died on March 2, 1949 in Luck now. “A handful of grey ashes , long ago at rest, Still are thy pleasant voices they nightingales , awake ; For Death , he take the all away , but them he cannot take”----William Johnson Cory.

This is rightly said that Death could only perish the mortal body of this “ super woman’ , the golden voice that penetrated through the hearts of thousands still in every true Indian . Sarojini Naidu emerged as one of the leading Political figures from a delicate girl fond of poetry. Her poem has its own unique style and charm .Patriotism and nationalism were her favorite subjects.

In today’s India , gripped by many traumatic problems like poverty , illiteracy , terrorism, corruption and mismanagement, that golden voice echoing from the past gives a ray of hope which send the message that spiritual power can win over muscle power in the final run. But it seems as if we are least concerned to rectify the deteriorated system .Or is it mere lack unless you make efforts to rotate the wheel, you will not reach the destination.
